“Biodiversity, I write your name” by Philippe Grandcolas

“Can you believe it, in 1986, we had to invent the word “biodiversity” to name the diversity of life, something our Western societies couldn’t even name !”
In this article, Philippe Grandcolas, Research Director in CNRS and Deputy National Scientific Director CNRS Ecology and Environment, reminds how fragmented and poorly understood our vision of the living world still is, despite its very important role. This causes a lak of coherence and sort-sighted decisions.
👉 The term “Biodiversity” may be recent, but it describe a ancient reality, one highlights our inability to name, understand and integrate the diversity of life into our worldview.
👉The role of the biodiversity is often forgiven, underestimated : we still ignore the importance of the microbiota and microorganisms, both in ecosystems and in human health. Some elements, like biological evolution and ecosystem interactions are too often left out of the picture.
👉”Too often, we seeonly painful constraints in measures aimed at preserving it when they only serve to preserve our future profits.”
Economic activity and countless jobs depend on biodiversity: it’s an invisible infrastructure underpinning our societies. Protecting it is a necessity.
And you, the biodiversity issues are enough taken in count in you sector ?
